Christopher Gillette, Twin Buttes, charged with murder
Christopher Lewis Gillette, 34, Twin Buttes, is charged in U.S. District Court with second degree murder after a shooting on the Fort Berthold reservation last week.
According to court documents, Gillette is accused of shooting and killing James Mossett and shooting and wounding Wayne Moran on Aug. 14.
Mossett had hitched a ride with Moran and his friend, Lisa Lee, and Gillette’s mother had given Mossett permission to stay at the residence. The group of three had arrived on the morning of Aug. 14 and were seated at the kitchen table. Gillette reportedly became angry with the group because they were smoking methamphetamine and had asked them to leave. Gillette went to his bedroom, came back with a 9 mm handgun in his waistband, pulled the gun and fired at the group. Mossett was shot in the head and died; Moran was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Gillette initially told authorities that he thought someone had broken into his home and he got his gun and fired at shadows he saw moving. He said the gun had been accidentally discharged. He later said he fired the shots because he was intimidated by the men.
According to a law enforcement affidavit, officers found three shell casings and marks consistent with three shots having been fired. Mosset’s vehicle was in Gillette’s garage.
Gillette is in custody at the Burleigh Morton Detention Center in Bismarck pending trial. No trial date has been scheduled.
