Law enforcement to make Special Olympics torch run
Law enforcement officers from across North Dakota will take to the streets, highways and community routes during the week of May 11-15 as part of the 2026 Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics North Dakota. The torch run is the largest grassroots fundraiser and public awareness campaign benefiting Special Olympics athletes.
The Minot event on Tuesday, May 12, will start at SCHEELS at Dakota Square Mall at 10 a.m. and finish at Buffalo Wild Wings, 3820 S. Broadway. Community members are welcome to come and support the runners.
More than 400 law enforcement officers will participate in Torch Run events in Bismarck, Grand Forks, Jamestown, Minot and Fargo, each carrying the Flame of Hope to shine a spotlight on inclusion, courage and the power of community, according to the Special Olympics organization. Since its start in North Dakota in 1985, the Law Enforcement Torch Run has united officers and Special Olympics athletes in a powerful partnership, raising funds and awareness that directly support more than 1,000 athletes competing in 11 sports statewide each year.
Known as the “Guardians of the Flame,” participating officers help ensure athletes with intellectual disabilities can train, compete and experience the life-changing impact of sport.
“This is about much more than a run,” said Nancy Hanson, president/CEO of Special Olympics North Dakota. “It’s about relationships, visibility and the unmistakable message that our athletes belong, are valued and are celebrated in every North Dakota community.”
