Prom, graduation still on for now in Minot Public Schools

Supt. says school district will follow recommendations regarding coronavirus

The Minot High School prom has been rescheduled for May 9 and the Minot High School graduation is still scheduled for Memorial Day weekend, Minot Public Schools Superintendent Mark Vollmer said on Friday.

“I think it would be premature to cancel everything,” said Vollmer.

The governor ordered closures of businesses and government offices through April 20 and said he would review the decision on April 15. Vollmer said he does not know whether it would be possible to resume classes in a school setting yet this spring.

Vollmer said the school district will continue to follow Center for Disease Control and North Dakota Health Department regulations regarding how to slow the coronavirus. Face-to-face classes in the district have been canceled for the time being and instruction is being offered online or via alternative methods. Some school district employees are working from the office, but the district aims to limit close contact between people.

Vollmer said teachers still aim to be as responsive to students and parents and their questions and continued learning while they are teaching online as they were when everyone was in a traditional classroom setting. Parents of students with special needs have been provided with materials and technology to work with their children at home and case managers are in regular touch with them, he said. Each situation and child might be different, he said.

Vollmer also said the district is providing emergency child care for the school-age children of essential workers at Lewis and Clark and Edison Elementaries. The district is continuing to deliver school lunch for children as well.

For now, the district’s concerns are focused on the current crisis and other concerns, including the looming problem of school overcrowding at the middle and high school level, has been put on hold.
