Change of plea scheduled for murder suspect Michael Dennis II

Court records show that a change of plea hearing has been scheduled for Wednesday before North Central District Court Judge Gary Lee for Minot murder suspect Michael Lamart Dennis II, 25.

Dennis is charged in district court in Minot with Class AA felony accomplice to murder and Class A felony attempted in connection with the Jan. 12 shooting death of Dominick Stephens, 29, and the attempted murder of Stephens’ passenger, Patrick Bost, 28.

Dennis has been held in custody at the Ward County Jail since he turned himself in on Jan. 29.

One of Dennis’s co-defendants, Marcus Jermaine Lee, 22, has pleaded guilty to Class A felony accomplice to murder. In exchange for Lee’s guilty plea, the prosecution is recommending that Lee be sentenced to 20 years in prison, with a requirement that he serve 15 years, and three years of supervised probation following his release. Lee would be required to serve 85 percent of his sentence under state sentencing guidelines. North Central District Court Judge Doug Mattson accepted the guilty plea and ordered a pre-sentence investigation and will sentence Lee later. Mattson is not necessarily required to accept the plea deal.

A second co-defendant, Donald Lee Cooper Jr., 27, fled Minot after the shooting and was captured in Milwaukee on April 3. According to the U.S. Marshals Service, Cooper was fleeing from police into a motor vehicle and crashed into another vehicle with two occupants in Milwaukee. Both of the people in the other car died. Cooper is being held at the Milwaukee County Jail and has been charged in Wisconsin State Court with two counts of reckless homicide, two counts of fleeing a police officer and causing a death, and two counts of operating a vehicle with a suspended driver’s license. No date has been scheduled for his extradition to North Dakota to face pending charges of Class AA felony accomplice to murder, Class A felony attempted murder, Class C felony reckless endangerment, and Class C felony terrorizing.
