Minot man runs as Libertarian for governor

A Minot man has been endorsed as the Libertarian candidate for North Dakota governor.

DuWayne Hendrickson was selected to run on the party’s ticket this past weekend. Joshua Voytek of Fargo was chosen for lieutenant governor. Mattie Richardson-Schmitz of Sheldon, in southeastern North Dakota, has been endorsed for the District 26 House seat.

Further endorsements are possible as the party continues to seek candidates.

Hendrickson, a self-employed businessman, ran as an independent for governor in 2008, receiving 2% of the vote. He had sought Republican endorsement, but instead he ran as a Republican write-in for the House in the 2010 primary and for governor in the 2012 primary. He ran as a write-in for the U.S. House in the 2012 and 2016 general elections. He also once ran for Ward County Commission.

As a candidate, elimination of the state’s property tax is a high priority, according to Hendrickson’s campaign information.

“Our state can afford it, and it is time that we truly own our home,” he said.

His campaign also is promoting legalization of cannabis and term limits while opposing a refinery near Theodore Roosevelt National Park and a Roosevelt Library in Medora. Hendrickson opposes refugee immigration into North Dakota until the problems of sheltering the homeless are addressed.

Voytek was the Libertarian candidate for lieutenant governor in 2016. He ran as a Libertarian for the North Dakota Public Service Commission in 2010 and 2012.
