Cole Verbruggen, Minot, sentenced to 120 days for driving through garage, hitting woman

Cole Michael Verbruggen, 26, will spend 120 days in jail for driving through a garage, hitting a car and sending a woman flying onto a sidewalk in Minot on Nov. 30, 2018.

The woman suffered serious injuries, including multiple broken bones, and she needed surgeries, a long period of hospitalization and extensive rehabilitation after the accident. Her car was also totaled and her property was damaged.

Verbruggen had originally been charged with Class C felony criminal vehicular injury, but court records show that he pleaded guilty on Friday to Class A misdemeanor aggravated reckless driving in front of North Central District Court Judge Todd Cresap.

Cresap sentenced Verbruggen to 360 days in jail, with a requirement that he serve 120 days, and two years of probation. Verbruggen must also obtain a chemical dependency evaluation, participate in Ward County’s 24/7 Sobriety Program for regular testing for alcohol use, and must pay $825 in court costs and restitution to be determined within 90 days. Cresap also ordered Verbruggen to have no contact with the victim. Verbruggen will be permitted release from the Ward County Jail to work or to attend school while he is incarcerated.
