Lightning strikes cause fires at two saltwater disposal sites

Lightning strikes on Friday caused two fires at saltwater disposal sites in Mountrail and McKenzie Counties.

The North Dakota Oil and Gas Division was notified of the two fires during Friday’s storms in western North Dakota.

On Friday, Slawson Exploration Company Inc. notified the division and proper authorities of a fire at the Van Hook 1-9 saltwater disposal, about seven miles east of New Town. Slawson reported 36,414 gallons of oil and 109,326 gallons of brine were released on location.

Bullrock, LLC also reported, on Friday, lightning strike at the HOB SWD #1 saltwater disposal, about five miles south of Keene. About 4,620 gallons of oil and 41,580 gallons of brine were released on location due to the incident.

All product released in both incidents remained on location and cleanup is under way. N.D. Oil and Gas inspectors have been to both locations and will monitor cleanup progress.
