Past month’s snowfall above long-term average

Eloise Ogden/MDN Snow removal has been a common sight in Minot and the area over the past weeks. The past month of February had more than a dozen inches of snow above the long-term average.

The past month of February had 18.8 inches of snowfall, 13 inches above the long-term average of 5.8 inches, according to Joe Effertz of the North Central Research Extension Center, south of Minot.

“The total moisture for the month was 1.8 inches which is 1.3 inches above the long-term average of 0.5 inches,” said Effertz.

The past month’s average temperature was -5.8 degrees, which was 17.8 degrees below the 112-year long-term average of 12 degrees, Effertz also said.

“This was the second coldest February I have on record. There was only three days this month where we didn’t dip below zero degrees,” he said.

-31 degrees on Feb. 8 and the high was 33 degrees on Feb. 1. He said Feb. 1 was the only day above freezing for the month.

Minot’s weather for the rest of this week is expected to be back to below zero temperatures and on Sunday there will be patchy blowing snow, according to National Weather Service forecasters.
