The lazy days of summer means summer camp for many area kids.

On June 28, a group of youngsters at the Triangle Y Camp, located 10 miles southwest of Garrison lined up for treats at the camp canteen and chattered about their favorite activities.

Mya Johnson, 10, from Mandan, Maya Smith, 10, from Minot, Charity Hughes, 10, and Alexis Hughes, 10, both from Dickinson, said they enjoyed swimming, doing arts and crafts and learning new things.

“I really love doing the tower,” said one of the girls. “It’s really tall and really fun.”

Kids at the camp can learn how to climb a wooden tower at the camp.

Older kids, those between 11 and 15, can sign up for the Climbers Camp, which gives kids a chance to develop the skills needed to belay, climb at different levels on the tower, inspect the equipment and tower, and secure ropes. Kids participate at their own level of comfort.

Windjammers camp, for those ages 11 and 15, teaches kids how to windsurf, sail and canoe.

The Horsemaster Camp, for those between the ages of 9 and 15, gives kids a chance to learn all about horses and riding.

Ali Gross, 10, from Gackle, said she loved riding on horses.

There are also camps for younger kids, including a mini camp that is only a few days.

Best of all is the chance to become part of camp traditions. The girls said their camp counselor woke them up at midnight to take part in “Midnight Rope Swinging.”

There was always a dance on Wednesday night and the girls said they would get to join in the tradition of signing a canoe paddle.

Some of the kids have been coming to the camp for years, while others are newcomers. The girls said they enjoyed making new friends and seeing old ones.

When they are older, some of them might choose to come back as camp counselors.

The Triangle Y Camp is in session through the first week in August. The seventh session will run July 30 through Aug. 4. More information on camp registration and openings is available at www.triangleycamp.org
