Several spills occur in oil fields

BISMARCK Several oil-related spills were reported this week in Williams, McKenzie and Divide counties.

According to the North Dakota Health Department, Hess Corp. on Monday reported two spills located three miles apart in Williams County, both resulting from an opened valve.

One site is about 12 miles northwest of Tioga. About 21,000 gallons of produced water were spilled and a portion escaped the site and impacted a wetland. Remediation efforts have begun and the company is using vacuum trucks to recover fluid at the site.

The second spill occurred about 15 miles northwest of Tioga and involved about 19,320 gallons of produced water. Some of the spilled fluid escaped the site and may be impacting a nearby wetland. The company is evaluating that site.

An oil release in McKenzie County was reported Tuesday three-quarters of a mile west of Cartwright.

A truck with residual oil in its tank overfilled with fresh water at Caliber Midstream Water Depot, and the fluid spilled out through the truck’s overflow vent. A total of 1,260 gallons was released, some of which impacted an isolated oxbow of Charbonneau Creek, but did not enter the creek itself. Cleanup is under way.

The North Dakota Oil and Gas Division reported it was notified of a contained brine (saltwater) release at the Robert Stephen 5-8H well site about five miles south of Fortuna in Divide County.

Murex Petroleum Corporation reported Sunday that 21,000 gallons of saltwater and 30 barrels of snow and ice that were present prior to the release were contained and recovered on site.

The cause of the incident was listed as a pump leak. A state inspector had been to the location.
