Boom Slam! returns for more poetry fun and competition

Joe Davis has spent time leading up to the Boom Slam! Poetry Slam by visiting classrooms in Minot. Earlier this week he visited Magic City Campus and took a photo with Language Arts teachers Angelina Edison and Lonna Wheeler alongside former student and current artist/videographer Aundre Livingston.

Joe Davis is bringing Boom Slam! back to Minot to celebrate National Poetry Month and to give poets in Minot a chance to showcase their talent. Boom Slam! will take place April 28 at the MSU Beaver Dam. There will be a half hour social at 1:30 p.m. followed by the Boom Slam! at 2 p.m.

Boom Slam! was started by Joe Davis and Magic City High School Language Arts teacher Angelina Edison. The event was started to create more space for teens to find their voice, form identity, shape culture, and build power with poetry as a catalyst.

“This is about more than poetry,” Davis said. “This is about empowering a generation to build the world they want to live in.”

Davis explained that the goal of the event was to help students authentically express their values, their dreams, their stories and have their voices celebrated to hopefully help them become better leaders in the future.

“Oftentimes students are told to shut up and sit down. But I think they should stand up and speak out. The old cliche is that they’re the leaders of tomorrow. True, but they are also shaping culture today,” Davis explained.

Boom Slam! Poetry Slam gives students a chance to find their voice, form identity, shape culture and build power with poetry. Students from schools throughout Minot take part in the competition.

Students from high schools throughout Minot can take part, competing with their original works for a chance to be crowned slam champion, win prizes and have their voice heard.

Boom Slam! only has three simple rules: pieces must be original work, no costumes or props, and each poem should be three minutes or less. Those taking part will need to bring three poems with three rounds of competitions.

Every participant will receive a prize and the first three places will win $300 for first, $200 for second and $100 for third.

Before the Boom Slam! begins, there will a 30 minute social with music, free food, games and more prizes.

The event has free admission and is open to the public and all ages.

To sign-up, interested high schoolers can send their name, school and year through messenger to facebook.com/JoeDavisPoetry or by email to joedavispoetry@gmail.com.
