Local schoolchildren learn joy of giving

The Minot Daily News praises the efforts of children and teachers at Lewis and Clark Elementary in Minot who have raised $15,881.59 between 2005 and 2019 with their Penny Harvest campaign. During the holiday season, children bring in coins and dollars. Their pooled resources go toward adding meat, fruits, and vegetables to classroom food baskets that will be given to Lewis and Clark families in need to make their holidays brighter. Vaccines could be available to healthcare workers this week

They’re finally coming – vaccines that is. It comes after nearly a year of illness, far too many hospitalizations and deaths from COVID-19, quarantines and isolations, postponed family gatherings and visits, job layoffs, not to mention constant testing, mask mandates, occasional restrictions on businesses and events, frequent online schooling and Zoom meetings. Hospitals need all the help they can get

Many U.S. hospitals are under siege because of COVID-19. Both in personnel and other resources, they need all the help they can get. Earlier this year, when most people thought the epidemic would peak by this fall, Congress acted wisely by including in the CARES Act a provision suspending part of a 2011 law. That statute reduces Medicare payments to hospitals by 2%, through something called the Medicare “sequester.” Whether that ever was wise is questionable. It is no fault of billionaire Jeff Bezos that COVID-19 is the grinch who stole Christmas from many people in our communities. Bezos did not bring the virus to our country.
