Area educators were recognized with state awards from the North Dakota Association for Career and Technical Education (NDACTE) recently.
Melora Buchholz, from Turtle Lake-Mercer Public Schools, received the New Teacher of the Year in Family and Consumer Science Education award.
Buchholz taught online FACS classes for Minot Public Schools as well as in-person classes. During this past school year, Buchholz contacted Turtle Lake-Mercer Public Schools about opening a FACS program. She worked with the school to develop the curriculum as well as build a FACS room, as they had not had coursework for more than 30 years. She since has been working for Turtle Lake-Mercer as a FACS teacher as well as teaching FACS over ITV to students in Max, Elgin, Gackle-Streeter, Watford City, Berthold and Parshall.
Cora Huss, from Beulah Public School, was awarded the New Teacher of the Year in Agriculture Education. Huss has been teaching agricultural education for three years for Beulah Public School. The school has a woodworking shop, greenhouse and potting room, 10 welding booths in the metal shop and a meat lab.
Kathy Walsh, from Harvey High School, was named Teacher of the Year.
Walsh, who is a FACS teacher and FCCLA adviser, has been teaching at Harvey High School for the past 26 years. She has been a member of various professional organizations throughout her career and served as the president of the state FACS organization in 2005-06. The Harvey FACS department, under her direction, won the N.D. CTE Director's Award of Excellence in 2015.
Patrick Mineer, from Golden Path Solutions, Inc., Fargo, received the Champion for CTE Impact Award. Joe Weigel, from Southeast Region Career and Technology Center, was awarded New Teacher of the Year in Trade and Industry
