JONES: Race for boys Region 6 title is up for grabs

At the beginning of the boys basketball season last year, you kind of had a feeling Our Redeemer’s Christian School was going to have a special season.

And the Knights did. Finishing second at state is nothing to hang your head over.

And two years ago, the Rugby Panthers won the state tournament.

So as recent history shows, the winner of the Region 6 tournament has gone on it to do quite well at state.

So as the Class B season officially gets underway this week, the question has to be asked, who will win the Region 6 title?

The question is a difficult one to answer, considering there are five teams in District 12 alone that could very well win it.

While ORCS won’t be nearly as dominate as it was last season, the Knights will very much be in the thick of things. Jayden Wetzel, Leyton Lang and Dalton Steede will be a tough matchup for most teams.

Des Lacs-Burlington, coming off a strong finish to last season, returns a lot of speed and shooting. The Lakers, who have often played a difficult schedule, will only benefit from that type of schedule this season.

Drew Pearson and Mark Medalen will be difficult to slow down. Both of them should have big seasons.

Bishop Ryan played ORCS as well as anybody last season. The Lions were a halfcourt shot from John Reiten away from winning the District 12 tournament last season. And despite playing without its best player, Ryan only lost by six to ORCS in the region title game.

Ryan has one of the best leaders in the region in Eli Stewart. His leadership and experience will go a long ways this season for the Lions. Post player Anthony Vetter had a good season last year, and should be even better this year.

Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood has one of the best sophomores in the state in Isaac Undlin. As a freshman, Undlin showed that he can score in bunches.

As a more experienced player, once Undlin gets into a groove offensively, he is going to be extremely difficult to slow down.

Lewis & Clark-Berthold returns its starting five. Alex Nelson and Garrett Hanson are a fun duo to watch play. I saw them blow out a really good Parshall team in a game last season. Because of their history, the Bombers are a team you can’t overlook.

As I said before, any one of these teams could easily win the region. But if I had to guess, I would predict DL-B and Ryan will be playing for the region crown.

Considering Ryan edged DL-B by a point in last season’s region tournament, another contest between the two schools would be even better.
