Girls Soccer: Sentinels bounce back, take down Jamestown

Every second matters.

The Minot North girls soccer team found that out firsthand when Morgan Orth beat the first half buzzer by a single second to give the Sentinels their first lead of the game against Jamestown and a boost of momentum.

That momentum led to two more goals in the second half and a 4-2 victory over the Blue Jays on Thursday, April 9, at Sentinel Stadium. The Sentinels scored four unanswered goals after falling behind in the first 10 minutes of the match, bouncing back from their first loss of the season two days prior.

Jamestown took the early lead, scoring in the 9th minute. Layla Becker dribbled by a number of Minot North defenders and up to the goal line before centering a pass in front that found Gracelin Challeen, who deflected it in with her body for the goal.

Minot North (3-1-0 overall, 3-1-0 WDA) responded 10 minutes later with Kohlee Roberts netting her team-leading fifth goal of the season. In the 19th minute, Anistyn Perrin served a ball into the box off a corner kick. Jamestown goalkeeper Belle Sjostrom got her hand on the ball, but it deflected off the crossbar and onto the head of Roberts to tie the match.

The teams look poised to go to the locker room deadlocked, but the Sentinels had one last gasp before the break. With just seven seconds left, Perrin launched a pass 45 yards to Orth, who got behind Jamestown’s last line of defense. Orth beat the clock, putting it near-post past Sjostrom to put the Sentinels in front 2-1.

Brengiei Lonning stretched Minot North’s lead to 3-1 in the 45th minute. Lonning intercepted a clearing attempt from Sjostrom and capitalized on the turnover, scoring on a shot just inside 20 yards for her second goal of the year.

Julia Lewis rounded out the scoring in the 58th minute, netting Minot North’s fourth unanswered goal of the match. Perrin registered her third assist of the match off a free kick from 40 yards out into the box. Off the bounce, Lewis headed home a perfectly placed shot over Sjostrom’s head.

The Blue Jays (0-3-1, 0-2-1) held a 10-8 edge in shots on goal. Camryn Guy stopped eight shots and Sjostrom finished with four saves.

Minot North hosts Bismarck High on Saturday, April 11, at 2 p.m. at Sentinel Stadium.
