Prep Baseball: Sentinels win opener, split series at Williston

Tate Haugenoe recorded a double and two RBIs and Levi Balas and Gannon Hedberg each collected two hits as the Minot North baseball team earned a series split with Williston by taking the first game of a doubleheader, 4-1, on Friday, April 10. The Coyotes won the nightcap, 7-3.

The Sentinels (3-1 overall, 1-1 WDA) grabbed an early 1-0 lead, as Balas singled on a line drive to center field to score Hedberg in the top of the first inning. They added two more in the second, taking advantage of a pair of Williston errors in the frame. Jace Price led off the inning by reaching first safely after an error at shortstop and came around to score on an error by the pitcher fielding a bunt from Kayden Danielson. A sacrifice fly off the bat of Haugenoe gave the Sentinels a 3-0 lead.

The Coyotes (3-5, 2-2) got on the board in the bottom half of the second on an RBI single from Jaxon Jeannotte, but Minot North kept them off the board the rest of the way. The Sentinels reclaimed a three-run lead in the sixth on Haugenoe’s RBI double to score Brady Vigested.

Brody Mueller earned the win on the mound for the Sentinels. He tossed six innings of five-hit ball, allowing one run, striking out seven and walking one. Ashton Nickoloff suffered the loss for WIlliston, allowing four runs – one earned – in five innings, surrendering three hits.

The Sentinels were unable to secure the series sweep, as the Coyotes struck for the nightcap’s first four runs over the opening three innings to pick up their first win against Minot North in four chances this season. Williston registered 10 hits on the night, including three from Eden Mortenson, who tripled and drove in a pair of runs. Nickoloff and McCrae Heller each had two hits and two RBIs.

Mason Stewart and Landyn McGhee each drove in a run. McGhee had Minot North’s lone extra-base hit – a triple in the fourth inning.

Jeannotte picked up the win, allowing four hits in five innings. He allowed two runs, striking out one and walking three. Hedberg and T.J. Hjelmstad each tossed three innings. Hedberg allowed four runs on five hits, striking out three and walking two, while Hjelmstad gave up three runs on five hits, striking out three and walking one.
