Boys Wrestling: Minot United dual season ends at WDA Tournament
The Minot United boys wrestling team didn’t qualify for the state dual competition after dropping their first two duals at the WDA Tournament, falling to both Williston and Bismarck Century on Saturday, Feb. 7, at Starion Bank Gymnasium.
Minot United – the No. 3 seed from Pool B – dropped a 47-17 decision to Williston in the quarterfinal round to drop into a loser-out match later in the day. The Coyotes won nine matches compared to four for Minot United. Seven of Williston’s wins came via pin. Ayden Bohannon scored a 6-2 decision over Evan Berg at 189 pounds and Anthony Naea earned a 3-0 decision over Tucker Nelson at 215 pounds in the other two wins for Williston.
Minot United didn’t record a pin in the dual, winning two matches via technical fall, one via major decision and one via decision. Jack Combs (107), Jaxson Schumann (127), Korbin Kraft (139) and Cohen Racine (145) won their matches for Minot United.
Their season came to an end following their 36-32 loss to Bismarck Century in a loser-out dual.
Combs, Schumann and Kraft each won their second match of the day. Combs scored a 16-0 technical fall over Abrahm Huber. Schumann won a 10-0 major decision against Angelo Ebah and Kraft pinned Carter Wylde in 1:58.
Gavin Tanberg (152) and Berg also recorded pins for Minot United. The Patriots recorded four pins and a decision, major decision and technical fall.
Bismarck Legacy – the No. 1 seed from Pool A – defeated Bismarck High – the No. 1 seed in Pool B – 48-13 to win the WDA Tournament. Bismarck Century and Williston won their state qualifiers over Mandan and Dickinson, respectively, to earn a spot at the state tournament. Williston defeated Century for the No. 3 seed out of the West.
Minot United shifts their attention to the WDA Individual Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 14, beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the Byron Dorgan Youth Wellness Center in Belcourt.
