Beavers end their two game skid

The Minot State women’s basketball team cut their losing streak short at two in their fourth quarter comeback win against Bemidji State University at the MSU Dome on Thursday night, Feb. 5.

The Beavers’ women’s basketball team faced off against Bemidji State University once already this season. The Beavers won their game in Bemidji State University on Dec. 20 of last year 84-71. On Thursday night, the Beavers looked to double up on their victory.

The beginning of the game looked grim for the Beavers. Bemidji State scored the first six points of the game on back to back three-pointers. The Beavers slowly worked their way to try and match Bemidji State, but they were unable to tie the ball game in the first quarter. Bemidji State led 21-17 at the end of the first.

Bemidji State and the Beavers were evenly matched through the entirety of the second quarter, with the Beavers never more than five points behind through all but the first minute. The second quarter ended with Bemidji State still leading the Beavers 36-31.

The third quarter came and went without a score change yet again. The Bemidji State offense kept up their pressure and was able to widen their lead through the quarter, growing the deficit to as much as eight at 55-47.

The third quarter ended with the Beavers still trailing at 55-51.

Minot was able to turn the tables half way through the final quarter, taking their first lead of the game at five minutes 22 seconds with a three-pointer by redshirt sophomore Taryn Hamling. The two teams continued to struggle for the next few field goals, tying the ball game at 62-62 and 64-64. Bemidji State took the lead one final time before Minot State took their definitive lead.

The Beavers ended the game with a 77-69 victory over Bemidji State, ending their losing streak and improving their record on the season to 10-14.

Senior Jessica Mogen was the top scorer for the Minot State Beavers with six two-point shots and six completed free throws. She was followed close behind by Taryn Hamling with 15 points.

The Beavers will next play University of Minnesota Duluth in their second to last home game on Saturday, Feb. 7.
