Boys Swimming & Diving: Magicians drop home dual to Century
Andrew Francis won a pair of individual events and Tayson Solper claimed victory in the 1-meter diving, but it wasn’t enough for the Minot High boys swimming and diving team, as they dropped its dual meet to Bismarck Century, 112-71, at Magic City Campus on Friday, Jan. 2.
The Magicians won four total events, with their 200-yard freestyle relay team of Gavin King, Hunter Barnard, Josiah Reiss and Talmage Pehrson taking first place in a time of 1 minute, 37.03 seconds, finishing just over a second ahead of Century’s top relay team.
Francis delivered the first victory of the event for the Magicians in the 200 individual medley. The sophomore cruised in a state-qualifying time of 2:05.96. He finished well ahead of the rest of the field, as Century’s Jacob Dorrheim took second in 2:14.13. Francis also provided Minot High with its final event win of the night in the 100 breaststroke. It was by a closer margin of victory, but still rather comfortable, finishing more than three seconds ahead of the field in 1:08.27.
Francis was also part of the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay teams that took second.
Solper was one of three divers taking part in the diving event. He won easily with a final score of 268.15. Century’s Bridger Huelsman finished second with a score of 206.20 and Minot High’s Holden Williams finished right behind him with a score of 205.95.
The Patriots won the other eight events, highlighted by Isaac Vallie, Joseph Tamisiea and Kason Wolff. Vallie and Tamisiea won both of their individual events as well as both of their relay races, while Wolff swept his two individual events and finished first in one of two relay races.
Vallie won the 50 freestyle and 500 freestyle and served as the third leg in the 200 individual medley relay and the final leg in the 400 freestyle relay. Tamisiea was the third leg of the 400 freestyle relay and the starting leg in the 200 medley relay. Individually, he won the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle. Wolff served as the opening leg of the 400 freestyle relay, the final event of the evening. Prior to that, Wolff took first place in both the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly.
