Boys Tennis: Magicians edge past Sabers
Doubles proved to be the difference maker for the Minot High boys tennis team, taking two of the three matches en route to a 4-3 victory over Bismarck Legacy in a non-conference contest at Hammond Park on Tuesday, Aug. 26.
Calvin Olson and Owan Sundahl at No. 2 doubles and Kaine Bertsch and Blake Burckhard at No. 3 doubles each won in straight sets to clinch the victory for the Magicians (3-1). Boys Tennis: Sentinels drop conference opener to Patriots
The Minot North boys tennis team saw several close matches go the opposite direction in a 7-2 loss to Bismarck Century in the West Region opener for both teams on Tuesday, Aug. 26, at Hammond Park.
The Sentinels dropped a pair of three-set matches and four others required at least one set to extend beyond the standard six games necessary to claim the set. The Patriots won three of those four matches.
Century (2-3 overall, 1-0 West Region) swept all three doubles matches, with Hayden Parent and Cullen Satrom outlasting Brayden Callahan and Parker Vigestad in three sets, 7-6, 3-6, 10-6, at No. 1 doubles. Parent and Satrom both won their respective singles matches, with Satrom besting Callahan, 6-3, 7-6, at No. 2 singles.
The No. 3 doubles match between Century’s Teddy Andrist and Jacob Gross and Minot North’s Peyton Opp and Reece Blikre was yet another close match. The Patriots managed to eke out the win, 7-5, 7-6 (3). Andrist also squeaked by Blikre at No. 6 singles with a 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 victory.
Parker Vigestad got to Sentinels (1-4, 0-1) in the win column at No. 3 singles with a 7-5, 6-4 win and Lucas Griffith added the team’s other victory at No. 4 singles, defeating Mason Wagendoft, 6-4, 6-1.
Minot North heads to Bismarck Legacy on Thursday, Aug. 28, for a region contest at 4 p.m., while Century hosts Jamestown at 4:15 p.m.
Boys soccer: Magicians suffer first loss in shutout against Legacy
In a matchup of the last two unbeatens in conference play, defending state champion Bismarck Legacy scored a pair of goals following a scoreless opening half to hand Minot High a 2-0 defeat on Tuesday, Aug. 26, at the MDU Resources Community Bowl.
The Sabers have yet to concede a goal against a conference opponent this season, outscoring their foes 9-0 in that span.
Legacy (4-1-0 overall, 4-0-0 West Region) tallied the first goal in the opening minute of the second half. Riley Ketterling scored on a bicycle kick from 10 yards out on a pass from Owan Joyce. The scoring play started off a corner kick.
The Sabers doubled their advantage in the 63rd minute when Joyce took a feed from Nolan Healy and lifted a shot from roughly the exact same spot as Ketterling’s goal over the outstretched hands of Minot goalkeeper Ian Stewart.
The Magicians (3-1, 3-1) outshot the Sabers 9-6, but Legacy’s James Erickson saved all nine shots he faced. Stewart finished with four saves.
Minot hosts Williston on Thursday, Aug. 28, at Duane Carlson Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
