State fair features bullfighting’s first night

The first night of the Battle of Rumblehorn kicked off Monday at the North Dakota State Fair.
Monday night’s event featured the first and second rounds of the Bull Riding and American Freestyle Bullfighting competitions. Cauy Pokorny of Dunning, NE and Flasher, ND’s Layton Woodbury advanced to the Freestyle Bullfighting championship with their 85 and 78 point runs respectively.
There were just six qualifying bull rides during Monday night’s event with a three way tie for first between Stetson Long, Jaden Ozirney and Zane Cook with 78 points. Zane Cook walked away as the night one champion.
The winners of the first two rounds of the American Freestyle Bullfighting were given automatic entry into the championship round of day two. The top three scorers of the remaining contestants will compete in the Wild Card round of the competition. The winner of the Wild Card will get to join both day one champions in the championship round, with the winner being crowned then Battle of the Rumblehorn Champion. The lowest scorer on Monday night is cut from the competition. The second night of the Battle of Rumblehorn will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday night.
The bullfights are scored out of a total of 100 points with 50 for the rider and 50 for the bull to earn. Bulls earn points for their aggression and ferocity. Fighters earn points for poise, skill and agility.
