Larks cruise past Hot Tots 15-1
The Minot Hot Tots had a chance to catch rival Bismarck in the Great Plains West standings with a win on Sunday.
The Larks, however, weren’t in the sharing mood, crushing the Hot Tots 15-1 at Corbett Field, ensuring Minot will finish at the bottom of the standings when the first half of the season concludes after Monday’s slate of games.
Minot (9-26) surrendered the game’s final 14 runs, allowing 15 hits in one of its most lopsided defeats of the season. It’s the fifth time this season the Hot Tots have lost by at least 10 runs.
Sydney Ward highlighted Bismarck’s offensive onslaught, falling a double shy of hitting for the cycle. Ward blasted a 2-run home run to left field in the fourth inning for his first hit of the contest. He cleared the bases in the eighth with a 3-run triple and completed his night with an RBI single in the ninth. Ward finished with a game-high six RBIs.
He was far from the only Lark to contribute at the plate. Dasan Harris and Cristian Bernardini also tripled and Erick Dessens added a double to go along with three singles as he produced a 4-RBI night.
The Larks’ 1-5 hitters combined to go 13-for-25 with five extra-base hits, 15 RBI and 10 runs. Seven Bismarck starters finished with at least one hit.
Minot couldn’t muster anything close to Bismarck’s offensive production. The Hot Tots plated their lone run in the second inning on an RBI groundout by Ryan Castro that scored Christian Stratis.
Henry Allen had a team-high two hits to raise his batting average to .338, second on the team behind Matt Toomey, who is batting .341. Toomey had one of Minot’s five hits in the game.
Lake Hagen picked up his first win of the season on the mound for the Larks (11-24), allowing an unearned run on two hits, striking out two and walking one.
Trent Harris suffered the loss, surrendering four runs on five hits in three innings. He struck out four and walked three.
The Hot Tots and Larks meet again tonight in Bismarck to close out the first half of the regular season. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
