Track & Field athletes from Minot High and Minot North broke over two dozen personal and seasonal records during Monday’s varsity Last Chance Meet held at Dickinson State University.
The running events at Monday’s meet started off at 9:00 a.m. with the 3200 meter run. Minot North senior Nolan Howey took home first place in the finals for the boys’ race with a time of 10 minutes 26.77 seconds.
Alyviah Kopp, freshman at Minot North, also took home first place in the 3200 meter race with a time of 12 minutes 36.02 seconds.
The 9:00 a.m. start time also kicked off many of the field events. For girls, this included long jump, javelin, pole vault and shot put. Eleven personal and season records were broken by members of the Minot High and Minot North girls’ track & field teams.
Among the eleven was Minot High sophomore Averi Erck, who broke her long jump personal record with a jump of 16 feet and 2.5 inches to take home fourth place in the event’s finals.
The boys’ field events began with the high jump, discus and triple jump. Minot High senior Tayvin Patterson took home fourth place in the varsity discus finals and set a season record with a throw of 128 feet and 0 inches.
Minot North junior Gabriel Mendez also broke a personal record in the same event with a throw of 118 feet and 1 inch. Mendez took home ninth place in the event.
Later in the day, the boys’ field events consisted of the shot put, pole vault, long jump and javelin.
Not only did Minot High senior Mason Eichhorn set a personal record for javelin with a throw of 162 feet and 2 inches, but he also cemented himself in the Minot High School all time top ten for javelin.
“I was just riding on the bus, sitting in my seat when Coach Johnson came back and told me. I was very excited,” Eichhorn said. “It’s really cool to me that people in the future will look back on the list, and I’ll be on it. I think that’s awesome.”
Eichhorn’s throw was just two feet over the state qualifying distance, meaning this is his second event where he is state eligible.
“I was already going to state for shot put, but [I’m] super excited to be going for two events instead of just one,” said Eichhorn.
Minot North sophomore Gracen Rorem and Minot High sophomore Keira Davis also scored PRs in the girls’ triple jump event. Rorem took home fourth place in the event with a jump of 33 feet and 6.5 inches and Davis took home seventh place with a jump of 32 feet and 11.5 inches.
The only new qualifying member for the Minot High girls’ track & field team was sophomore Leighton Johnson. Johnson took home first place in the girls’ 300 meter hurdles varsity finals.
“After running, I went back up to the tent that we had at the meet. That’s when my hurdle coach … came up to me yelling that I had qualified. In the moment, it felt super awesome and exciting,” said Johnson. “It feels really great to qualify and … to get a chance to go to state in the 300m hurdle after training hard all season.”
Johnson earned her team another state qualification and herself a new PR with her time of 48.62 seconds.
The Minot North boys’ varsity team took home a total of 53.5 points earning themselves sixth place overall. Minot High’s boys’ team landed in eighth place with a combined total of 30 points.
The Minot North girls’ team took ninth place with a total of 36 points and Minot High girls’ team tied for fourth place with 81.5 points overall.
Not every team brought a full roster of competitors. The 2025 NDHSAA Track and Field State Meet is scheduled for May 22-May 24 in Bismarck, North Dakota.
