SURREY — Bruce Mack, head baseball coach of the Surrey Mustangs, celebrated his retirement on Friday after coaching the team’s last home game of the season.
Mack has been with the Mustangs for 32 years and has seen the team through some of its greatest triumphs.
Mack led the Mustangs to their state Class B title back in 1993 in addition to numerous other state appearances.
Just last year, Mack celebrated his 500th win with the Surrey Mustangs. In an interview with a local media outlet, Mack describes how one of his favorite parts about being a coach is connecting with the players.
“Rewarding. Humbling. Coaching that many kids, there’s so many favorite moments.,” Mack said. “[My] favorite part is just watching kids grow and grow up and learn to love the game. That’s all I’ve ever tried to do.”

Mack has received the NDHSCA Coach of the Year award twice during his tenure at Surrey High School during his 1992-1993 and 1997-1998 seasons.
The retirement party itself was a surprise for Mack. His wife had been the one to organize it and kept it a secret from him. Many friends and family joined in the celebration at Surry’s City Hall.
Many members of the community and fellow coaches made the trip out to congratulate Mack on his retirement. He spent the night shaking hands and talking with years worth of friends and former players. More than one young child came up to Mack to offer drawings they had made for him.
Surrey senior baseball player Marcus Hughes explained how great it was to play under Coach Mack.
“[Playing under Coach Mach] has honestly been a dream,” Hughes said. “He helps us not only on the field, but also in the classroom getting our grades up. I really feel like, as a player, I’ve become better in every aspect from him.”
Mack also served as an assistant coach for the Sawyer-Surrey Blue Sox legion baseball team to two back-to-back state titles in 1993 and 1994.
The Surrey Mustangs still have the 2025 NDHSAA Class B Baseball State Tournament left before the end of the season. The tournament will take place at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo, North Dakota May 29 through May 31.
