Rugby, Turtle Mountain play for seventh; Cardinals, Titans for fifth at Div A girls state

Four teams lost in the quarterfinals on day one of the 2024-2025 NDHSAA Division A Girls Basketball State Tournament at the Minot State University (MSU) Dome to set up two games in the consolation bracket of play at the MSU Dome on day two of the tournament.

The No. 6 Carrington girls played the No. 7 Turtle Mountain Community High School (TMCHS) girls in the first game while No. 4 Rugby faced No. 8 Dickinson Trinity in the second game.

Winners play for fifth place today while the seventh place game is at 10 a.m. at the MSU Dome today as well.

No. 6 Carrington 52, No. 7 TMCHS 33

The Braves controlled the tipoff and scored the first basket of the first game of the day. Carrington hit 1-of-2 free throws then went cold as TMCHS went on an 8-0 run and led 20-8 at the end of the first quarter of play.

The second quarter was a roll reversal of the first. Carrington took the momentum and scored by storm in the back-and-forth battle highlighted by steals, turnovers and missed shots. By the end of the second, the score was tied 24-24 at the half.

The Braves were on fire in the first quarter with 20 points scored. TMCHS scored four points in the second and six in the third quarter of play as the Cardinals found themselves in the lead through most of the third quarter.

Carrington led 39-32 with eight minutes left in the game.

The TMCHS started the game up 18-1 and were outscored 51-15 for the rest of the game.

Carrington went from 4-20 from the arc in the first half to 7-29 overall, shooting 3-9 in the second half. The Cardinals were led by Edyn Hoornaert with 14 points while March Johnson added nine. Isabel Wendel hit for eight points as well for Carrington.

The Braves were 4-10 from 3-point range in the first half and 5-21 for the game, shooting 2-11 in the second half of play. TMCHS was led by Aubree Jeanotte with ten points in the game. Emberlynn Poitra added seven points while Akealyes Azure hit for six in the game.

In the fifth place game, Carrington will face Dickinson Trinity at 11:45 a.m. today while the seventh place game between Turtle Mountain Community High School and Rygby will be at 10 a.m.

No. 8 Dickinson Trinity 51, No. 4 Rugby 45

The second game of day two on the consolation bracket side of the Division A Girls Basketball Tournament was between two very different styles of play. The height of the Dickinson Trinity girls with the inside game as opposed to the pressure defense that led to fast break transition scoring by Rugby was on display at the MSU Dome.

The Titans controlled the tip and surged to a 9-2 lead in the first half of the first quarter. Rugby fought back to an 11-11 tie with Dickinson Trinity holding the 13-11 lead after the first eight minutes of play.

As the Panthers started to shift defensively to double the taller inside Titan players, the outside shooters from Dickinson Trinity hit 3-9 from 3-point range.

The edge in shooting percentage helped the Titans hold the 27-23 lead at the half.

Both teams started the second half of play working to set the style and tempo of play. Rugby took the 29-28 lead with 5:12 left to play in the third quarter only to have the Titans tie the game from the free throw line on the next possession.

The back-and-forth play continued with Rugby holding the edge in scoring for the middle minutes of the third quarter. The Panthers turned up the shooting heat to end the third quarter and held a 41-35 lead with one quarter left to play.

The inside shooting game by the Titans- combined with early fouls by Rugby- kept Dickinson Trinity close to the Panthers as the clock ticked towards the end of the game.

Rugby held a 44-43 lead with 4:12 to play in the game when Dickinson Trinity with possession called a timeout to plan. The plan led to missed shots and another timeout for the Titans.

With 2:42 to play, the game was tied at 45-45. Missed shots, turnovers, fouls and the clock ran down to under one minute when the Titans hit a layup for the 47-45 lead. A turnover by Rugby put the ball back into Dickinson Trinity hands with 30.9-seconds to play.

The fouling began. Made free throws by the Titans iced the game. Dickinson Trinity moved into the fifth place game against Carrington while Rugby will face TMCHS for seventh place today.

The Titans were led by Nevaeh Tormaschy with 23 points and nine rebounds in the win. Annabel Scheeler added 11 points while Eloy McAvoy hit for nine points and six rebounds for Dickinson Trinity.

Avery Santjer scored 16 points for Rugby while Elise Fahnestock and Lacie Deplazes each added ten points for the Panthers. Katie Sullivan had nine rebounds while Deplazes added eight boards in the effort.
