Minot High sweeps Williston on home turf tennis courts

Kari Gibb/MDN Minot High senior Aidan Diehl returns a volley against the Williston Coyotes at the number two singles on Thursday, at Hammond Park.

The WIlliston Coyotes made the trek across the state to face the Magicians at Hammond Park and Minot High won all six singles and three doubles contests for the 9-0 win in Western Dakota Association (WDA) boys tennis on Thursday.

Grayson Schaeffer defeated Kallon DeLorme 6-1, 6-0 at number one singles while Aidan Diehl dispatched Kane Shannon 6-2, 6-0 at number two singles for the Magicians to set the tone with a 2-0 edge for the hosts.

Nolan Callahan had no trouble with Gavin Douglas 6-0, 6-0 at the number three singles while Thomas Griffith did the same with Evan Fisher 6-0, 6-0 at the number four singles to keep the ball rolling for Minot High.

Oliver Thompson beat TJ Nehring 6-0, 6-1 at the number five singles while Conor Odahlen won 6-3, 6-3 over Rhett Carnes at the number six singles for Minot High to sweep and post a 6-0 lead going into the doubles.

Schaeffer and Diehl played Fisher and Shannon at the number one doubles and won 6-1, 6-0 while Callahan and Griffith topped DeLorme and Nehring 6-1, 6-2 at the number two doubles for the Magicians. Nolan Moore and Thompson faced Douglas and Carnes at the number three doubles and swept 6-0, 6-0 for the 3-0 sweep in the doubles.

Minot High won all nine matches in straight sets. The win puts the Magicians (3-0, 6-1) atop the WDA standings with Mandan (2-0, 6-0) as each contest going forward will pit the top two teams in a race for the top spot going forward.

Up next for Minot High will be Valley City on Friday, and Fargo Davies and Fargo Shanley on Saturday, followed by a trip to Williston to face the Coyotes again on Tuesday.
