Hot Tots hold on for second win over Mudpuppies
The Minot Hot Tots (20-37) hosted the Minnesota Mudd Puppies (3-22) in the second of their two game series on Monday, July 29, at Corbett Field. The Hot Tots won Sunday’s game by a 14-12 score and are looking to finish the series on a winning note. The game was up for grabs with the game tying run at home plate at the top of the ninth, but Minot held on for the 7-4 win.
After a delay to the start of the game, the Hot Tots got on the board in the bottom of the second inning, scoring two runs. Brant Baughcum scored the first run on a bases-loaded walk that advanced Jordan Jordahl to first base. Peyton Becker scored the second run on a bases loaded, hit by a pitch play that advanced Keanu Jacobs-Guishard to first base. The Hot Tots led 2-0 at this point.
The Hot Tots added a third run in the bottom of the third inning when Baughcum scored on a bases loaded walk that advanced Jacobs-Guishard to first base. The Hot Tots led 3-0 at this point.
Minnesota had their turn at swinging a hot hand in the top of the fourth inning. A three-run home run by Josh Dykhoff allowed Brock Larsen and Will Smoot to also score on the play. The score was tied 3-3 at this point.
The Hot Tots regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when Becker scored on a Jacobs-Guishard sacrifice fly. The Hot Tots led 4-3 at this point.
The Hot Tots continued to slow cook their way on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning. Affholter scored an unearned run on a Blake Penso walk. The Hot Tots led 5-3 at this point.
Adrian Dominguez joined the festivities in the bottom of the eighth inning with his solo home-run to right field extending the Hot Tots lead 6-3. Baughcum scored another run off Becker’s put out for the Minot seventh run of the game. The Hot Tots led 7-3 at this point.
The Hot Tots batted 8-for-29 and had zero errors in the game. Xavier Esquer walked once. Abe Affholter batted 1-for-4, scored a run and walked once.Dominguez batted 1-for-5, scored a run, had a home-run and one RBI. Penso walked once. Baughcum batted 2-for-4 and scored three runs. Becker batted 2-for-4, scored two runs and walked once. Jonah Shields batted 1-for-2 and walked twice. Jordahl had an RBI and walked four times. Jacobs-Guishard batted 1-for-1, had three RBI and walked twice.
Dale Fry pitched three innings, allowed one hit, walked two and struck out three batters. Lucas Aguirre pitched three innings, allowed one hit, walked two and struck out batters. Ashton Jenkins pitched one inning, allowed one hit, one run, walked two and struck out one batter.
Minnesota batted 5-for-28 and had one error. Larsen scored a run and walked twice. Smoot batted 1-for-2, scored a run and walked twice. Dykhoff batted 1-for-4, scored a run, a home-run and had three RBI. Mathew Maulik batted 2-for-4. Cooper Nicholson walked once. Harrison Bowman walked once. Jack Mausser walked once. Chayton Fischer batted 1-for-4.
Liam Martin pitched three innings, allowed four hits, three runs, walked three and struck out one batter. Griffin Fenske pitched two and one-third innings, allowed one hit, two runs, walked five and struck out one batter. Ethan Hoffman pitched one and two-third innings, allowed one hit, walked one and struck out three batters. Carsen Barta pitched one inning, allowed two hits, two runs and walked three.
The Hot Tots will now visit the Gopher State to play Mankato MoonDogs on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 30-31.The Hot Tots will return home on Thursday, August 1, to start a two game series against Rochester Honkers in as many days.
