Two out rally in fifth gives Majettes win

The Sheyenne Mustangs (3-0, 7-1) made the trip to Minot to take on the Minot High Majettes (4-0, 8-1) in a non-conference matchup at the South Hills Complex. The Mustangs were sent scampering home with their first loss on the season.

The game started out with the Mustangs getting runners in play. A single and a walk put Sheyenne players on base. The third batter singled into a fielder’s choice, scoring a run. A follow up single led to a second run and a 2-0 lead for Sheyenne in the top of the first inning. Minot High reached first on an error but the next three batters were up and down.

The Majettes left one Mustang on base with three outs to start the second inning before getting to work on scoring runs. A double by Isabelle Anderson started the bottom of the second. Jillian Ackerman then bunted and reached first on a fielder’s choice that advanced Anderson to third. Then, Avery Lunde hit a triple to score both runners and tie the game. Raegan Terrel scored Lunde for the Majettes with a sacrifice single to give the Majettes a 3-2 lead going into the top of the third.

The Mustangs reached base on a walk to start the top of the third inning. A ground ball single scored the initial batter. A stolen base combined with a single gave Sheyenne a 4-3 lead going into the bottom of the third inning.

There was no scoring from that point on until the bottom of the fifth inning when Minot High began a two out rally. Tayler Falcon singled to reach base and Halle Baker hit a homerun to give the Majettes the 5-4 lead. Sydnee Bartsch was hit by a pitch. Singles by I. Anderson and Ackerman scored Bartsch to bring the score to 6-4 for Minot High. A single by Lunde scored Ackerman for the 7-4 lead.

A triple by Ellington Anderson and singles by Falcon, Gabbi Rohrer and I. Anderson taking first base on a walk led to a three-run inning and the 10-4 win for the home team Majettes.

For Minot High, Lunde was 3-3 batting with three RBIs and one run scored. Falcon went 3-4 at the plate, scoring two runs and adding an RBI while I. Anderson was 2-3 and E. Anderson, Baker, Rohrer and Ackerman all had a hit in the effort. As a team, the Majettes were 12-30 batting while being walked only once and struck out five times.

Baker pitched five innings with four runs on six hits, walked three and a strikeout. Terrel pitched two innings and allowed no hits and no runs, walked one and struck out two to finish the game.

Minot High faces Mandan in a doubleheader at home on Tuesday, April 16, weather permitting.
