Minot State falls 78-61 to Southwest Minnesota State

MARSHALL, Minn. — The Minot State women’s basketball team got a 29-point performance from the bench, but fell 78-61 to the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs on the road Friday in NSIC play.

The Beavers (9-21 overall, 6-15 NSIC) had two players score in double figures, led by Maya Aguilar, who had 16 points. Sydney Gustavsson added 14 points and Lorelei McIver added eight points and three steals.

How It Happened

After falling behind 10-4, Minot State went on a 5-0 run with 1:43 left in the first quarter to narrow its deficit to 10-9. Southwest Minnesota State answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Beavers down 13-11 entering the second quarter.

The Beavers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 30-26 halftime deficit.

Minot State’s deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Beavers faced a 55-45 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Minot State played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 19 points in the paint.

Minot State could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 78-61. Minot State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring 11 of its 16 total points.
