Minot Magicians advance with win over Jamestown Blue Jays

BISMARCK – the Minot High boy’s hockey team jumped to an early 2-0 lead and never looked back. The Magi led 4-1 after the second period and finished the game with a 6-1 win. Minot High goalie Devon Keller stopped 3-3 in the first period, 4-5 in the second and another 3-3 in the third period for a solid 10-11 saves for the game. The sophomore was solid in his performance.

Scoring started early with sophomore Ben Halaand taking a pass from junior Aidan Diehl at the 1:30 mark to hit the net. Roughly ten minutes later senior Jaxson Radke gathered an assist from Halaand to score again for Minot High.

Junior Mackley Morelli added goals in the second period at the 7:05 and 12:54 marks with assists from Diehl and senior Brock Mattson to hit the 4-1 mark. Jamestown’s Nate Waltz and Adam Sortland double tapped the puck to Tyson Jorissen for the only goal of the night for the Blue Jays in the second period.

The Magi had 43 shots on goal compared to the 11 for Jamestown, even though Minot High had the only two players in the penalty box for four total minutes of short handed play.

Junior Finlee Bentz added another goal at the 4:19 mark of the third period unassisted while sophomore Cole Richesson and junior Carter Coleman found junior Teegan Strand for the final score at the 14:32 mark of the final period.

Minot High will face Bismarck Legacy today with a puck drop of 7:30 p.m. Jamestown will take on Williston at 1:15 p.m. as the tournament continues.
