Erickson, Majettes stampede Roughriders

Sean WIlliams/MDN Minot’s Cierra Erickson, shown earlier this year, hit a three-run home run in the top of the first inning to help the Majettes to a 16-3 victory over Grand Forks Red River Friday afternoon in Fargo.

FARGO – The Minot Majettes’ softball team, who traveled to Fargo on Friday for the Midseason Madness tournament, looked to show eastern teams that they are a force in the state. Grand Forks Red Rever, coming into the game on a six-game winning streak in which they outscored opponents 100-7, received that message loud and clear.

Cierra Erickson set the tone with a three-run homer in the top of the first, as the Majettes ran all over the Roughriders enroute to a 16-3 win. Erickson’s blast scored Ellington Anderson and Kinsey Fjeld to put the Majettes up 3-0. They added two more runs in the inning when Sydnee Bartsch hit a ground ball single, bringing in Journey Larson and Gabbi Rohrer.

Erickson led all batters with four runs and six RBI on the afternoon, walking in the third and adding a double in the fourth that scored E. Anderson and Taury Hight. Other Majettes with multiple hits included Isabella Anderson, Bartsch and Hight.

The Roughriders’ runs came when Elizabeth Nuelle scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the second, and on a Rylie McQuillan home run that drove in Brooklyn Soderburg.

Halle Baker threw a complete game for Minot, allowing three runs over seven hits in five innings. She had one strikeout and a walk.

Ella Speidel took the loss for Grand Forks Red River. She surrendered 12 runs on nine hits over 2.2 innings. Amy Jacobson came on in relief and allowed four runs on four hits.

With the win, Minot improves to 25-1, 14-1 WDA, on the year.

Minot was scheduled to play a nightcap against West Fargo, but the weather caught up to the girls, and the game was cancelled.

Up next for the Majettes are Saturday games against Fargo North at noon, and Grand Forks Central at 2 p.m. Both games are weather permitting.

Starting at $2.99/week.
