Rugby girls win weekend tourney

Claims seventh straight CNDC title

This past Saturday, the Rugby Panthers girls basketball team wrapped up its seventh consecutive Central North Dakota Conference Tournament victory. Rugby served as the host school for the three-day tournament.

After defeating Rolla 68-43 on Thursday and Drake-Anamoose 57-23 on Friday, Rugby met Harvey-Wells County in Saturday’s championship round. In that contest, the Panthers had little trouble putting away the Hornets by a final score of 54-23. By intermission, Rugby had amassed a 30-9 lead and held Harvey scoreless during the entire second quarter.

The Panthers continued its dominant play in the second half as they outscored Harvey 24-14 in the final two periods. Junior forward Mykell Heidlebaugh led all players in scoring with 14 points for the Panthers. Meanwhile, teammates Joran Jundt and Kendyl Hager also reached double figure scoring totals with 12 and 11 points respectively.

In other tournament news, Drake-Anamoose defeated Glenburn in the third-place game 55-54. Emma Jones led all scorers with 25 points in defeat for Glenburn while Halie Fletschock and Jamie Lemer each tallied 19 in the win for the Raiders.

St. John topped New Rockford in the fifth-place game 50-46. Alani Morin posted a team-high with 12 points for St. John while New Rockford’s Kennedy Demester led all scorers with 20. In the seventh-place contest, it was Rolla who got the better of TGU 72-51. Rolla’s Morgan Leas enjoyed a big game scoring with 35 points to lead all players. For TGU, Sophie Bachmeier led her club with 16 in defeat.
