Minot State weekend roundup

Ryan Ladika/MDN Cam’ron Dunfee, 1, led the Beavers in scoring with 18 points and added five rebounds and a trio of assists Saturday night.

The Minot State Beavers wrapped up a busy winter sports weekend, as the men’s and women’s hockey teams, men’s and women’s basketball teams, and men’s wrestling team were all in action across the country the last three days.

The Beavers’ men’s hockey squad completed a 2-1 showing at the ACHA Chicago Classic held in Champaign, Illinois Nov. 19-21, facing off against Arizona State University, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and Adrian College.

Minot State kicked off the mid-season tournament in emphatic fashion, downing the Sun Devils by an 11-1 final score. The Rebels handed the Beavers their first defeat of the 2021-22 season by a slim 2-1 margin, with Davis Sheldon’s ninth score of the season staving off a potential Rebels shutout, but Minot State bounced back Sunday with a 5-2 victory over the Bulldogs.

Nick Doyle, Carter Barley, Reece Henry, Eric Soar and Drew Carter each found the back of the net in the Saturday win, and Riley Wallace earned his second win of the weekend after holding Arizona State to just one goal with 16 saves. Minot State’s next contest is scheduled for Dec. 3 on home ice against the University of Mary Marauders.

The Beavers’ women’s club also earned a bounce-back win Friday, earning a split against Adrian College with a 2-0 win after dropping the opener 3-1 to the Bulldogs.

Megan Norris and Haley Wickham accounted for the lone two goals in the contest and Haylie Biever stood on her head throughout the contest, making double-digit saves in each period and 41 on the day to earn her second shutout of the season. After their two contests against the University of Michigan-Dearborn were canceled, the Beavers will return to action Dec. 4 against the University of Minnesota.

Minot State men’s basketball concluded its non-conference slate with a perfect 5-0 mark Saturday evening as well, downing Montana State University Billings by a 77-59 final score. Cam’ron Dunfee led all Beavers scorers in the affair, notching 18 points on 5-of-10 shooting, including a pair of three-point shots on five tries.

Kody Dwyer and Eli Cave also racked up double-digit points for Minot State with 16 and 10 points, respectively, and Jaxon Gunville tallied nine on three triples on four tries from beyond the arc. The Beavers will begin conference play Nov. 23 when the team welcomes the University of Mary to the Magic City.

The Beavers’ women’s basketball team ended its non-conference schedule with a thud, dropping two straight games against Truman State, 77-69, and Maryville University, 70-66, Nov. 19-20. Amber Stevahn (29), Lucy Chapman (29) and Natasha Elliott (27) led the team in scoring across the two games, with Chapman scoring a game-high 23 points in the loss to Maryville. Like the men’s team, the lady Beavers will begin conference play at home against the Marauders Tuesday evening.

Minot State men’s wrestling also produced a strong showing at the Younes Hospitality Open in Kearney, Nebraska Saturday morning, as 20 of 27 Beavers wrestlers won at least one match in a tournament that featured close to 50 schools, per a Minot State release.
