Soccer: Mavs edge Hawks 1-0 in 2OT

North Dakota (3-11-1, 1-6-0 Summit) battled Omaha (8-6-2, 5-2-0 Summit) at Bronson Field for the entire 90 minutes and at the end of regulation, the match was still scoreless. It was not until the 112th minute in the second overtime period that the Mavericks, currently fourth in the Summit League soccer standings, were able to put away the Fighting Hawks with a goal in the sudden victory overtime.

“I thought it was an even game and we were very unfortunate not to win,” UND Coach Chris Logan said of the result. “Omaha had a couple of looks as well and I think it came down to ultimately they are an older team with a lot more experience and some of their older players bailed them out at the end. We are growing every game, but it is just taking time to get there because we’re extremely young. I was really happy with how we played today and don’t think either team deserved to lose the game.”

The match ended in the 112th minute when Omaha’s Sena Ahovissi found Grace Ostergaard near the box and she passed to Sophia Green who headed the ball in from eight yards out for the golden goal and game-winner. It was the only shot attempted in the second period of overtime by either team. Prior to that point, UNO held a 16-6 advantage in shots, which was a 13-5 shot margin at the end of regulation.

Both teams recorded three saves in the contest and Omaha attempted nine corner kicks to North Dakota’s two. Bailey McNitt was the most aggressive Fighting Hawk offensively with four shots and one shot on goal. Lexi Miller and Mary Gasaway also each attempted one shot on frame apiece.

Madi Livingston started at keeper for UND and played the entire game, notching three saves and giving up one goal. Defenders Gasaway and Taylor Lange were the only other Hawks to play the entire 102-minute match, holding Omaha scoreless until the final seconds.

North Dakota will now turn its attention to St. Thomas. The Fighting Hawks and Tommies will meet on Friday with kickoff slated for 4 p.m. in St. Paul, Minnesota.
