Wrestling: Beavers fall to UMary 24-20

For the second time this year, the Minot State Beavers came up short against in-state foe University of Mary. This time around, the loss came on the road in Bismarck.

On Thursday evening, MSU found itself on the short end of a 24-20 final against the Marauders. UMary jumped out to a 12-0 lead following back-to-back pins to start the match. At 184, Minot State’s Keegan Berry earned a 6-1 decision over Grant Litke which represented the first win of the night for the Beavers. Meanwhile, Berry bolstered his season mark to 4-0 with that victory.

Two matches later, Jordan Will (285) recorded MSU’s second win in a 5-1 decision over Emmitt Brooks, making the score 15-6 in favor of UMary at that point. Oscar Nellis (125), Kelby Armstrong (133) and Lincoln Stormer (141) then reeled off consecutive wins for the Beavers to momentarily take a 20-15 lead. While Nellis notched an 18-3 technical fall victory over Jeremy Leintz, Armstrong was a 4-3 decision winner over Laken Boese. As for Stormer, he earned a pin at the 4:13 mark against Drew Steidler to help Minot State jump out ahead for the first time in the dual.

The lead was short-lived however, as Shadi Mitwalli had to retire due to injury, giving UMary’s Chandler Mooney the win at 149. With MSU trailing 21-20 going into the final match, Anthony Velazquez outlasted Minot State’s Nathan Baca in a 8-7 decision to close the door on the Beavers.

Now 0-4 on the year, Minot State is scheduled to take on conference rival Minnesota State University Moorhead on the road in its next meet on Feb. 4. Start time for that dual is slated for 7 p.m.

Starting at $2.99/week.
