MSU men’s hockey completes rivalry sweep of U-Mary

MANDAN — Fresh off a 5-3 win Friday night inside Maysa Arena in front of one of the largest crowds of the season, the No. 5-ranked Minot State men’s hockey team headed south down U.S. Route 83 to finish what they started.

The Beavers (28-4-3) needed overtime on Saturday to sweep the western North Dakota rivalry series against the University of Mary (38-9-3).

MSU won 3-2 on the road in Mandan against the ACHA Division II foe.

Davis Sheldon played the hero for the Beavers with both the game-tying goal in the third period and the game-winning goal in overtime.

Seth Cushing scored both of U-Mary’s goals. One in the opening period and one in the third period.

MSU’s Adam Wowryk tied the score at 1-1 with 23 seconds left in the first period. It was his team-leading 28th goal of the season.

Sheldon answered Cushing’s second tally with 16 minutes left in the third period. He scored again 35 seconds into overtime.

MSU narrowly outshot U-Mary 32-29. Beavers goaltender Joshua Bykowski made 27 saves.

Minot State takes its final regular-season road trip out of the state of North Dakota next weekend. The Beavers head to Salt Lake City, Utah, to challenge the University of Utah.

MSU ends the regular season with a home-and-home series against No. 11-ranked Jamestown on March 5-6. First game in Jamestown and the second game in Minot.

The National Tournament in Frisco, Texas, is scheduled for March 19-24. The Beavers are the defending ACHA Division I national champions.
