Magi basketball hangs on, defeats Century 65-57

BISMARCK — Basketball games are often won and lost on the boards. On Tuesday night, the Minot High School boys basketball team used a 39-25 rebounding advantage in its road victory over Bismarck Century, 65-57.

The Magicians (10-2, 9-2 WDA) recorded 34 defensive rebounds in their win over the Patriots (6-5, 6-4 WDA). In the teams’ first meeting this season, Minot senior center Caden Johnson made his presence felt.

Johnson finished with a double-double. The big man posted team-highs in points (14) and rebounds (13) in the victory.

“Both (Johnson) and Easton (Larson) were really good,” Minot High head coach Dean Winczewski said. “We were able to get the ball in the post. Our offense was not what we wanted, but sometimes, you have to find other ways to win.”

Minot’s starting backcourt also recorded double-digit scoring totals. Junior guard Deonte’ Martinez and senior guard Jaxon Gunville scored 11 points apiece.

Additionally, the Magi received major bench contributions — 28 points came off the pine. Minot limited Century to 25 points in the first half and 32 in the second half.

“Defensively, we gutted out possessions,” Winczewski said. “We rebounded exceptionally well.”

Minot will host Mandan (7-5, 7-4 WDA) for a 7:30 p.m. contest on Friday.

“It’s good to get a road win in the WDA,” Winczewski said. “Now, we will get ready for Friday.”
