Winning in Minot at Badlands Circuit Rodeo Finals

Injury doesn’t keep native Australian cowboy down; South Dakotan makes winning ride at Minot Y’s Men’s Rodeo

Jamie Howlett has never been the kind to let a little injury get him down.

And being a bareback rider, he’s had his share of injuries.

The Rapid City, S.D., cowboy won the third round of the RAM Badlands Circuit Finals Rodeo, hosted by the Minot Y’s Men’s Rodeo, riding with broken bones in his foot and a smashed hand.

The injury occurred during the second round of the rodeo, held as a matinee on Saturday, but he rode through it. “I didn’t know how tonight’s ride would go,” he said, “if I could squeeze properly” with his hand, which was his riding hand, the hand that goes into the bareback rigging.

He scored 88.5 points on Championship Rodeo’s horse Blessed Day, his third check in as many rounds of the circuit finals. The 29-year-old won second place in both the first and second rounds, and is neck and neck with fellow bareback rider Ty Breuer, Mandan. Both cowboys have 250 points in the average, the combined scores after three rides.

Breuer has also had a good circuit finals, having won first place in the first and second rounds and second place tonight. Howlett was complimentary of his fellow competitor. “Ty’s a very tough competitor here, and just to get in front of him, that’s a big deal.”

Howlett has had other injuries more serious than the broken foot and smashed hand. Competing at the National High School Finals Rodeo in 2010, he tore his groin and rotater cuff. A native of Australia, he had planned to stay in the U.S. to go to college and rodeo at Western Texas College in Snyder. But because of the injury, he went back to Australia to heal.

Two years later, he returned to the U.S. and college, competing collegiately and qualifying for the College National Finals Rodeo in 2015, where he finished as reserve champion bareback rider. After graduating with an associate’s degree in welding, he moved to South Dakota.

This is his first Badlands Circuit Finals qualification; he has competed at the Texas Circuit Finals Rodeo four times.

South Dakotan Shorty Garrett put on a show during the third night of the Badlands Circuit Finals.

He scored ninety points on the Sutton Rodeo Co. horse Prom Night to win the round.

It was the third time he and Prom Night had tangoed, and each time they’ve danced, the horse has won him money.

“She’s taken me to the winner’s circle every time,” he said. “In fact, on our way up here, I told my girlfriend it sure would be nice to draw Prom Night up here, and I’ll be darned if I didn’t get her.”

He rode the horse, a 10-year old mare, at the Badlands Circuit Finals four years ago, at the Fort Pierre, S.D., bronc match, where he was 90 points, and at Rodeo Rapid City.

The Dakotas are known for their excellent saddle bronc riders, so setting a new arena record is an honor, Garrett said. “It isn’t very often you’re ninety points at the Badlands Circuit Finals,” he said. “You have to work for it. There’s a lot of good guys here that dang sure could be anywhere in the world standings right now.”

In the average race, Garrett is one and a half points ahead of Ty Manke. Garrett has 249.5 points on three head; Manke has 248. The winner of the average (the combined total on four head) qualifies for the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo, along with the season winner.

Other winners from the third round of the Badlands Circuit Finals Rodeo include steer wrestler Scott Kleeman (4.2 seconds); team ropers Wyatt Bice and Parker Murnion (5.1 seconds); barrel racer Lisa Lockhart (13.55 seconds); tie-down roper Trey Young (9.0 seconds); bull rider Ethan Lesiak (86.5 points) and breakaway roper Taryn Sippel (2.5 seconds).

The final performance of the Badlands Circuit Finals Rodeo wraps up on Sunday, October 6, with a 1:30 pm matinee, with the 2020 Miss Rodeo North Dakota coronation at 1:15 pm. Badlands Circuit champions for the year-end and the average will be crowned and will qualify for the Ram National Circuit Finals Rodeo in Kissimmee, Florida April 2-5, 2019.
