MSU softball picks up first win

LAS VEGAS — The Minot State softball team capped its season-opening trip to Las Vegas for the Desert Stinger Tournament with its first victoy on Sunday. The Beavers (1-2) topped Cal State Monterey Bay on a walk-off sacrifice fly to left field by Karlee Coughlin to plate Julia Suchan in the eighth inning for a 3-2 victory.

MSU scored two runs in the first inning at Majestic Park with Suchan hitting an RBI double and pitcher Zoya Robbins helping her own cause with an RBI single to center field.

CSU Monterey Bay pulled runs back in the fourth and fifth innings before Coughlin came through in the eighth.

Maggie Mercer and Lauren Cowden each had two hits for the Beavers.

Robbins went all eight innings, allowing five hits and two runs.

The Beavers are back in action this weekend inside the Minot State Bubble for the Air-Supported Dome Invitational. On both Saturday (Feb. 9) and Sunday (Feb. 10), MSU will play Black Hills State at 9 a.m. and then Minnesota Crookston at 11 a.m.
