Magi basketball topples Bismarck Legacy, 71-48
BISMARCK — The Minot High boys basketball team (7-2) had little trouble on the road Saturday, lighting up the Bismarck Legacy Sabers (7-3) in a wire-to-wire 71-48 win.
“Our kids played really well,” MHS head coach Dean Winczewski said. “We were consistent in making it difficult for Legacy to score, and we built on our lead. To beat Legacy, who is a really great team, the way we did on the road is a big win for us.”
The Magicians started the game with a statement, jumping out to a 12-0 lead and riding that momentum to a 33-24 advantage at the half.
The Magi extended that lead to double digits in the second half thanks in part to a strong group performance from deep. Minot shot 6-for-15 (40%) from behind the line in the second half compared to Legacy’s 0-for-5 shooting en route to the victory.
The Sabers had no answer for senior Alex Schimke, who racked up a game-high 20 points. The Magi also had another three players reach double-digit scoring: Jaxon Gunville (13), Easton Larson (12) and Deonte’ Martinez (10).
The win marks Minot’s third in a row, and the Magi will look to make it four when they battle the Bismarck Century Patriots Tuesday on the road at 7:30 p.m.
Majettes basketball fall to Bismarck Legacy, 53-46
BISMARCK — The Minot High girls basketball team (3-6) couldn’t quite get over the hump on Saturday, as it lost a tightly-contested road match to Bismarck Legacy (8-2) by a score of 53-46.
The Majettes kept pace in the first half by staying aggressive and getting to the line with ease. Minot went 8-for-9 from the charity stripe as a team, but the Sabers still held a 31-25 advantage at halftime.
The Majettes managed to exchange buckets in the second half but never gained any ground due to a strong performance by Legacy’s Taryn Allmaras, who had nine points down the stretch to help her team secure the win.
Allie Nelson finished with 17 points in the loss, while fellow juniors Lauren McLean and Tia Haskins chipped in 10 and 8 points, respectively.
The Majettes will try to rebound on Tuesday when they host Bismarck Century at 7:30 p.m.
Magi hockey suffers 6-1
loss to Fargo Davies
FARGO — The Minot High boys hockey team (4-6) ran into some stifling defense on Saturday, as the Magicians lost to Fargo Davies (9-3) on the road by a score of 6-1.
The Eagles ran away with it early by outscoring the Magi, 2-0, in the opening period. That trend also continued in the second period when Davies scored another two unanswered goals to take a 4-0 lead into the third period.
After going down 5-0, Minot’s Jack Plemel finally got his team on the board with a goal off an assist by fellow junior Payton Philion in the fourth minute. But the Eagles got the last laugh by adding another goal to their total and securing the 6-1 win.
Davies recorded 38 shots on goal to Minot’s 17. Senior goalie Odin Nelson finished with 32 saves for the Magi in the loss.
Next up for Minot is a home game against Bismarck Century on Tuesday at 7:30 at Maysa Arena.
