Vistas blank Dickinson to stay undefeated at state

Sean Arbaut/Special to the MDN Minot Vistas starting pitching Alex Schimke (6) shares an exchange with a teammate Sunday evening during the Class AA American Legion State Tournament at Corbett Field. The Vistas defeated Dickinson, 5-0.

Alex Schimke picked up right where Carson Tonini left off and the Minot Vistas are three wins away from their first Class AA State Tournament championship since 2010.

Behind 6 1/3 scoreless innings from starting pitcher Schimke, the No. 5-seeded Vistas took down No. 8-seeded Dickinson, 5-0, in the second round of the state tournament Sunday evening at Corbett Field.

Schimke only allowed three hits before giving way to Derek Nygaard to get the final two outs.

In Minot’s two victories on its home turf at the state tournament, they have only conceded a single run. Tonini threw a complete game on Saturday in an 11-1 victory over Williston to kick off the tournament.

Nygaard opened the scoring Sunday with an RBI sacrifice fly in the second inning. Nick Murphy was the next batter to the plate and delivered an RBI single to bring in Jack Plemel.

Nobody scored again until the sixth when Nygaard picked up another RBI, this time with a single.

The Vistas brought in two more runs in the seventh on a bases loaded walk to Dylan Vigestad and a fielder’s choice off the bat of Nygaard to earn his third RBI of the contest.

Nygaard and Plemel each had two hits, as Minot only outhit Dickinson 6-3.

Dickinson starting pitcher Sam England was dealt the loss despite a decent outing by going six innings and giving up three runs on six hits. No one for the Roughriders had a multi-hit game.

The Vistas continue to advance on the winner’s side of the bracket and will face the other unbeaten team left in the bracket, No. 2-seeded West Fargo, at 5:30 p.m. this evening at Corbett Field.

Both No. 3 Bismarck and No. 4 Williston were eliminated from the state tournament on Sunday.
