Minot High’s Dodin advances to singles quarterfinals at state tennis tournament

GRAND FORKS — The deciding match came down to Minot sophomore Haya Dodin Thursday for the team state tournament win. Now, she goes for gold in singles.

Dodin, along with six other Majettes, began competeing in the NDHSAA State Tennis Tournament singles and doubles championships.

The Majettes proved as a whole that they are the best team in the state. After the initial rounds Friday, four Majettes remain to fight for a spot on the podium for the individual championships.

On the doubles side, Minot’s Gwen Mathews and Sofia Egge dropped out of the competition early.

Kali Askvig and Alyssa Henson advanced out of the first round, but was stopped by a doubles pair from Valley City in the quarterfinals. The Majettes found success in the consolation side, finishing Friday with a win over a pair from Century to advance to the consolation semifinals. At 10 a.m. today, Askvig and Henson will battle for a spot in the fifth-place match.

Eighth-grader Eden Olson advanced to the state tournament in singles at the West’s No. 7-seed, but two losses in a row knocked her out of the individual tournament.

Junior Raquel Egge started her day with a win over West Fargo’s Izzi Nankivel, winning 6-1 and 6-1. West Fargo’s Preeti Chemiti, No. 2-seed from the East, put the stop to Egge and defeated her in sets of 6-4 and 6-4.

Egge dropped to the consolation bracket, defeating Grand Forks Red River’s Anna Caoili, 6-2 and 6-1, to land a spot in the consolation semifinals. Today at 10 a.m., Egge will face Legacy’s Abby McPherson for a spot in the fifth-place game.

Dodin, after winning two matches in a row in sets of 6-0 or 6-1, will move on to face West Fargo Sheyenne’s Chemiti, who she squared off with Friday. The match will begin at 10 a.m. today as Dodin plays for a spot in the championship match.

Today’s matches begin at 10 a.m. at Choice Health & Fitness in Grand Forks.
