Former Magi Bollinger called up by the Yankees
Nine years removed from being a standout for the Minot High School baseball team, left-handed pitcher Ryan Bollinger was called up to the big leagues Wednesday by the New York Yankees.
The 27-year-old journeyman had a 3-0 record in three starts with a 0.90 ERA this year with the Double-A Trenton Thunder prior to his contract being purchased by the Yankees on Wednesday.
Bollinger played in Australia, Canada, Germany and made a couple stops in the independent Frontier League before landing with the Yankees’ organization on Dec. 16, 2017. He also had a stint from 2011-13 in the minor leagues with the Chicago White Sox.
Out of high school, the Philadelphia Phillies selected Bollinger in the 47th round, with the 1,247th overall selection, of the 2009 MLB draft as a first baseman. He signed rather than enrolling at Iowa Western Community College, then he was released by the Phillies on June 15, 2010.
In his time with Minot High, Bollinger played four years of varsity baseball with the Magi and with the American Legion Minot Vistas. The Magi reached the state tournament all four years and the Vistas won a pair of state titles during his tenure.
Bollinger was also awarded with the Louisville Slugger North Dakota High School Player of the Year during his senior season with the Magi.
The infielder turned pitcher from Maple Grove, Minnesota, is listed at 6-foot-5 and 230 pounds on the Yankees’ active 25-man roster. For the time being, Bollinger will likely be called upon to provide depth in the bullpen for New York.
Entering Wednesday’s games, the Yankees’ bullpen was ranked sixth in the majors with an ERA of 3.31 and had the fourth-best opposing batting average (.214).
The Yankees have a six-game homestand coming up against the Los Angeles Angels (May 25-27) and the defending World Series Champion Houston Astros (May 28-30).
