People best served by informed legislators

Sen. Dick Dever , Bismarck As a member of the ND Senate Appropriations Committee, I chair the sub-committee that manages the budget of the Department of Human Services. It is the largest budget in State government and provides a greater impact in the lives of more citizens than any other agency. Understanding the budget requires an understanding of the services provided by the agency. It is not possible in our part-time citizen legislature to gain the knowledge and experience in three sessions to manage the budget in the fourth allowed by the term limits measure. If the people ...

Educational leaders urge ‘no’ on Measure 1

Aimee Copas NDCEL Executive Director Bismarck NDCEL (North Dakota Council of Educational Leaders) representing K12 school leaders and administrators in North Dakota are gravely concerned with the possibility of the passage of a constitutional amendment which would create term limits for our state legislators.  I personally share this concern.  As educators, we commonly work closely with our legislators in our state to ensure policies and funding for our North Dakota public schools are appropriate and in the best interest of our students in North Dakota.  Individuals who have had ...

Disappointed in Norsk Hostfest

Kathy Kallestad, Garrison My husband and I were very disappointed in the Hostfest this year. #1 — It started out with the fact that the only way to get in was to have your Ticketmaster ticket on your phone.  #2 — $5 to park. NEVER have we had to pay to park for the Hostfest. #3 — No buses to shuttle people in OR out. We walked 1/2 mile in and we got there in the morning, so we were closer to the All Seasons Arena than most folks who came after us.  We can’t imagine what that was like for older/hard to get around people. They were using golf carts they said! We ...

Special thank you to Sanford

Paulette Streitz, Minot A special thank you to Sanford Health Equipment for providing the use of the wheelchairs at no charge or profit. It was a service you provided for the Hostfest goers that was utilized by many. A special thank you from P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization) Chapter G in Minot. You graciously allowed our chapter the opportunity to raise money to provide funds to help support educational opportunities for women. So many women have benefitted from our nonprofit organization, not only in Minot, but throughout the United States and Canada.

Solution for racism exists

Nathan Green, Minot I am concerned that with all the back-and-forth dialogue regarding racism, there has been little to no mention of the cause for racism, nor the solution to it.  To understand why racism exists, you need to look no farther than the pages of the Holy Bible.  Racism, like all sin, exists because of the consequences of the first sin committed by our human parents in the garden of Eden, namely Adam and Eve disobeying a direct commandment from their Creator not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The consequence of that first sin is that the ...

Say no to ND term limits

Rep. Mike Nathe, Bismarck Measure 1 proposing term limits for the ND legislature is an attack on the public’s longstanding right to choose who they wish to vote into office. Since statehood North Dakotans have had the right to vote for the candidates they choose. Term Limits takes away that right. Don’t let big money, outstate interests change the states constitution and our way of choosing our legislative candidates!! This measure is being introduced because outstate interests are upset at the legislature for not passing their agenda. So, now they want to change the rules. ...
