Helen Wald, 93, Surrey, ND, passed away Saturday, August 30, 2025, at Souris Valley Care Center, Velva.

Helen Johanna Schiele was born November 7, 1931, the daughter of Nick and Elizabeth (Schatz) Schiele, in Karlsruhe. She was raised and educated in Karlsruhe. She furthered her education attending night school college in Minot for three months.

She married James Wald June 9, 1953. They made their home in Surrey and were blessed with four children, Rebecca, Terry, Joey, and Corey.

Helen worked at Clarence Parker and Leland Parker Restaurants, S&L Store, Dime Store, and Clute Office Equipment.

She was a member of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, St. Leo’s Confraternity, and St. Joan of Arc Guild.

She loved to crochet. She made many blankets for the grandkids and great-grandkids. She also crocheted baby caps and donated them to the maternity ward at the hospital. She was always baking and you could always find goodies in her freezer. Her specialty was her kuchen, that was always at many of the family weddings and Christmas gatherings. Every summer she would have a good size garden and was busy canning. She taught herself to wallpaper and would help wallpaper for family members and sometimes did a few side jobs. She loved to go shopping and was always seen being very fashionable. She especially loved her jewelry and collecting coins. In the summer she would go camping at Fort Stevenson State Park with family and you could find her playing cards with the grandchildren.

Her loving family includes: husband of 72 years, James; children, Rebecca (Robert) Whitted, Terry (Doreen) Wald, Corey (Christy) Wald; daughter-in-law, Stacey Wald; grandchildren, Kristin (David) Amundson, Jason (Tia-Lee) Whitted, Megan (Greg) Petrick, Heidi (Chad) Poser, Matthew (Amanda) Wald, T.J. (Erica) Wald, Britney (Tanner) Vix, Levi (Peri) Wald, Madison Wald, Kylee (Rey) Obert, Morgan Wald; great-grandchildren, Ayden Amundson, Ethan Amundson, Tayten Amundson, Cameron Whitted, Kimber Whitted, Eleanor Petrick, Winnie Petrick, Ruby Petrick, Carter Poser, Alley Poser, Ada Poser, Grayden Wald, Griffen Wald, Gavin Wald, Virginia Wald, Brinley Wald, Ames Warner, Asher Wald, Oliver Obert, Octavia Obert; step-great-grandchildren, Ashlyn Vix, Hayden Vix, Lakyn Vix; brothers, Nicholas Schiele and Frank Schiele; step-brother, Dave Volk sisters, Alice (Jim) Miller and Monica Carpenter; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Joey Wald; sisters, Margaret Schiele, Mathilda Tichenor, Marcella Bane, Marie Bachmeier; brothers, Matthew, Peter, Joseph, Emanuel, Sebastian, George Schiele; sisters-in-law, Helen Schiele, Betty Schiele, Dorma Schiele; nephews; Darrell Schiele, Vincent Schiele, Randy Schiele, Craig Raub; stepmother, Eva (Volk) Schiele; step-siblings, Mike Volk, Anton Volk, Dorothy Adams, Alice Kraft, John Volk, Barbara Kuntz, and Theresa Adams.

Mass of Christian Burial: Tuesday, September 9, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, Minot.

Interment: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot, ND.

Visitation: Monday from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Vigil Prayer Service: Monday at 7:30 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Memorials: are preferred to Our Lady of Grace Food Pantry and Surrey Senior Center.
