A lifelong farmer, Mitchell was dedicated to the land, spending his entire life maintaining and caring for the farm. He had a deep passion for operating combines and a wide range of other heavy machinery, which he used to harvest a variety of crops. He graduated from Stanley High School in 1967 and attended Williston College for one year in 1968. Mitchell proudly served in the U.S. Army North Dakota National Guard from August 28, 1969, to August 28, 1975, as a forklift and load operator with the rank of Specialist 5.

On April 11, 1987, Mitchell married the love of his life, Doris, and together they built a beautiful life and family.
