H. Ronald Dahl, Jr.

Hubert Ronald “Papa” Dahl, Jr., 81, Mohall, died Friday, June 21, 2024, at a Minot hospital.

He was born May 21, 1943, in Decorah, Iowa, to H. Ronald Sr. and Edna (Brenna) Dahl in Decorah. He grew up in Mable, Minn., and graduated from high school in 1961.

When he was eight-years-old, he used to mow the grass; he got paid 25cents but he was not strong enough to push the mower so he subcontracted to other kids for 10 cents.

He attended college at St. Olaf, Luther College and Winona State University where he studied math and history. He moved to Iowa after attending Winona State. He worked as a store manager at a shoe shop in Boone, Iowa, He moved to North Dakota in 1969.

In 1970, he moved to Brockton, Mont., and taught on the reservation. He went back to school at the University of Montana in Bozeman until 1973. He always said he wanted to be a professional student. He then went to work for the Air Force with civil service. He started working at the commissary at Fortuna AFB.

He met Susan Penney in in 1974, and they were married on May 29, 1976. Not only did he gain a wife, but he gained the most amazing daughter anybody could ever ask for. In September of 1991, the Fortuna AFB closed. After he started working at the commissary at Fortuna AFB, he was caretaker at Fortuna AFB from September 1979 to September 1991. In September of 1991, they moved to Mohall. He was transferred to Minot AFB and worked in Family Advocacy until he retired in 2003.

Ron worked in the office at Zion Lutheran Church, Mohall, for three years. In more recent years, he did pulpit supply for many area churches. He enjoyed playing golf, watching Jeopardy every day and telling stories of days gone by. He also always had a joke to tell.

Family: On earth he leaves behind his loving wife of 48 years, Susan; and his best puppy, Angel, Mohall; daughter, Kathy, Lansford; son, David (Sally) Perrin, Waltham Cross, England; grandchildren, Matthew (Cassidy), Glenburn, Samantha (Jaye), Grand Forks, Patrick (Amber), Dickinson, and Isabella (Duece), Lansford, Mark (Terri) Perrin, London, England; great-grandchildren, Lyric, Ryder, Andrew, Kenzie, Serenity, and Luna, Sarah Jane, Ruby, and Blake; sister, Rochelle Mottershead Rocky, Mount, N.C.; nieces and nephews, Cheston (Lynda) Mottershead, Pierce Mottershead, Brenna (Rick) Bennet, and Cara Mottershead.

Ron was preceded in death by: His loving parents, Hubert “Jake” Dahl Sr. and Edna Dahl; special dog, Tina; and son-in-law, Mike Lee welcomed him with open arms in heaven.
