Edith Porter, 97, long-time Minot, ND, resident passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 2, 2024 in her home.
Edith Shavers was born on May 22, 1927, in Brandon Manitoba, Canada, a daughter of Max and Sarah (Gilmore) Shavers. Her father was a furrier and ran a fur store with the help of her mother in Brandon.
On February 9, 1947, Edith was united in marriage to Harold Porter in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The couple made their home in Minot, where Harold was a partner of Porter Bros. Dakota Hide and Fur Company, and Edith was a homemaker to the couple’s children Gary, David, and Carol Ann. She was not just an exceptional baker, but also a loving mother who enjoyed bringing together her family for Jewish holidays and creating cherished memories.
Edith’s husband Harold passed away on June 28, 1997.
Edith was a member of the Temple Beth Israel Synagogue in Minot, the Minot Chapter of Hadassah, and the North Dakota Republican Women. During the summer, she enjoyed vacationing with her children and extended family at Clear Lake Manitoba. She also was an avid Bridge player with her friends and family.
Edith’s life was a testament to her belief that we should always have something to look forward to, a philosophy that she lived by and shared with those around her.
Her loving family includes her children, Gary (Sherrie) Porter, Minnetonka, MN; David (Gail) Porter, St Louis, MO, and Carol Ann (Daniel) Berlin, Teaneck, NJ; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and siblings Sid (Pearl) Shavers and Gladys (Harvey) Kimmelman.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Max and Sarah Shavers; her husband, Harold; and siblings Sid (Pearl) Shavers and Gladys (Harvey) Kimmelman.
Graveside service: Tuesday, June 4, 2024, at 4 pm at the Hebrew Cemetery, Minot, North Dakota.
