Carl Kalvelage
April 17, 1935-May 22, 2020
Carl Henry Kalvelage
died peacefully at Trinity
Hospital Friday morning,
May 22, 2020, at the age
of 85.
He was born in Erie,
Pennsylvania April 17,
1935 to Carl Kalvelage
and Madylin Smith. He
had one younger brother
Joseph Kalvelage who to
this day lives in the house
they were raised in.
Carl joined ROTC in
college where he earned
the rank of Lieutenant in
the US Army. He dealt
blackjack on the Las Ve-
gas strip in the late 1950’s
where he developed his
legendary card skills. He
went on to marry Norma
Jean DiPaolo and they had
one son Michael Carl Kal-
velage.
In the early 1960s, they
moved to Minot where he
pursued his career as a
Political Science Professor
from the early 1960’s until
his retirement in the late
1980’s. Carl influenced
many young lives and
leaves a legacy of a caring,
passionate, and engaging
mentor. It was nearly im-
possible to receive a fail-
ing grade in one of Carl’s
classes. Although he nev-
er owned a computer he
authored and co-authored
a number of books on
research techniques and
Political Science.
Carl was a kind soul, a
loyal and generous friend
to a fault. He would feed
scraps to the begging dog
under the table, tipped
generously, and went out
of his way to avoid con-
flicts with the exception
of a heated political de-
bate. He loved reading,
playing Bingo and having
a drink with friends.
I am going to miss you
dad.
