Leonard Schiffman

Leonard James Schiff-
man, 100, went home to
his Lord and Savior on
Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2020.
He was born May 1,
1919, on the family farm
in Stafford Township,
Renville County, rural
Sherwood, to Peter and
Maude (Callahan) Schiff-
man. He was one of eight
children. Leonard grew
up helping out on the
farm his dad homesteaded
in 1901. He went to
school in Stafford Town-
ship.
Leonard married Edna
Elaine Ackerson on June
14, 1941, in Tacoma,
Wash. Leonard and Edna
had four children,
JoAnne, Robert, Janette
and Joyce.
In August of 1942, dur-
ing WW II, Leonard was
drafted into the U.S.
Army. He served as a
Staff Sergeant in the Mili-
tary Police until he was
discharged in February of
1946. He returned to the
Sherwood area, Prosperity
Township, where he
farmed until 1981. Leo-
nard and Edna retired and
moved into Sherwood in
1981. When Edna broke
her hip in 2004, they
moved into the Good
Samaritan Home in
Mohall. Leonard and Edna
were married for 67 years.
Edna passed away June
17, 2008, and Leonard
chose to stay in Mohall.
Leonard served on the
Prosperity Township
board and school board
for Prosperity Township
and Sherwood, the St.
James Catholic Church
council, and the cemetery
board. He was a member
of the Bothun-Peterson
American Legion Post
#213 for over 70 years.
Leonard enjoyed playing
cards, fishing and visiting
with family and friends.

Leonard was preceded
in death by: his parents,
Peter and Maude Schiff-
man; wife, Edna; sisters,
Esther Ackerson, Leona
Kitto, and Goldie Glen
Clancy; brothers, Martin
and Lawrence Schiffman;
brothers-in-law, Sheldon
“Jack” Ackerson, Russell
Kitto, James Clancy,
Robert Glen, Richard
Knutson, and Alvin Knut-
son; sisters-in-law, Caro-
line Tveten and Shirley
Mau; and several nieces
and nephews.
Funeral: 2 p.m., Satur-
day, Feb. 1, 2020, at St.
James Catholic Church,
Sherwood.
Burial: Sherwood Un-
ion Cemetery, Sherwood,
in the spring.
Recitation of the
Rosary: 7 p.m., Friday,
Jan. 31, 2020, at the
church.
Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m.,
Friday, at the church.
